England vs Pakistan in Cricket World Cup 2023

Who will win!

Explained: What is the necessary winning margin for Pakistan to defeat England and advance to the World Cup 2023 semifinal?

Pakistan and England will play their final 2023 World Cup group stage match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, November 11.

Although for very different reasons, both teams will find great value in this match. In order to qualify for the Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan in 2025, England will aim to place in the top eight.

With four victories in their previous eight games, Pakistan, on the other hand, is still in the running to make it to the semifinals. Both Afghanistan and New Zealand had eight points prior to the Kiwis' Thursday victory over Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.

What needs to happen for Pakistan to advance to the World Cup 2023 semifinals against England?

Prior to the match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, Pakistan's supporters and players would have been hoping that the Asian team would triumph or that the game would end in a draw, leaving New Zealand with a maximum of nine points and only a single or zero point.

If any of these events had come to pass, Pakistan would have qualified with just a victory over England on Saturday, moving up to 10 points. However, there would still be a very remote chance that Afghanistan would defeat South Africa and surpass Pakistan's net run rate (NRR).

They have, however, been dealt the worst possible blow in the New Zealand vs Sri Lanka match, as the former won and with ease.

The current state of affairs in Pakistan is as follows:

Case 1: Pakistan, batting first, will need to defeat England by roughly 287 runs to surpass New Zealand's net run rate. This is a very unlikely margin of victory, given how poorly the reigning champions have performed in this tournament and how quickly they are out of the game.

For instance, Pakistan must bowl out England for 12 runs or less if they score 300 after batting first. Pakistan must bowl out England for 112 runs or less if they reach 400 runs.

Case 2: If they bat second, though, their task becomes even more challenging. Pakistan would still need to chase that target in 2.3 overs to surpass the Kiwis, even if they were to bowl England out for just 50.

Conclusion: Consequently, Pakistan is effectively eliminated from the World Cup. There is no hope for Pakistan if England bats first. Their only remaining chance is to bat first, try to reach a score of at least 400, and then cheaply bowl England out. Even though it is incredibly unlikely, you never know!
